I'm a feminist
I'm supposed to like pink, I'm supposed to be docile, quiet, submissive and very adjusting and accommodating. And if I raise my voice, if I have my own opinions, if I stand up for my rights or against boys, you blame me for being 'feminist'. If you knew what the word meant, I would take it as a compliment. But for most, it just means someone who keeps praising women, who beats men up and who don't let men disrespect women.
This is what feminism really means- "Feminism is a collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women.[1][2] In addition, feminism seeks to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment."
All day long, all year long, you read stories of rape cases, girls and their families who are tortured for dowry, forced marriages, girls who aren't allowed to get educated, girls who are ill-treated. You see your girl friends, your sisters, your mothers living that life everyday. A life in which they aren't safe after a certain time, where they are discriminated against, a life where they are told they should wear bangles and sit at home. A life in which no matter what heights they reach, they are told that their only purpose in life is to produce babies and take care of a home and family. And yet, you realised all this when Aamir Khan mentions this on his show.
Don't get me wrong. Men have their own share of problems. They life a hard life too. All I am saying is that try and understand the women in your life and their share of problems.
Some women don't get the problems their counterparts face. Sometimes they are bought up to believe that they deserve the torture. Some boys are bought up to believe that women are meant to be treated in a certain way. We all are responsible for the problems women face. It's disheartening to see a mother-in-law demanding that her daughter-in-law gets a girl child aborted. Isn't she a woman? It saddens me when a girl says a rape victim deserved it because she asked for it when she wore short clothes.
Come on people, be open minded. Would you say the same thing about your sister? Or your mother? Probably not. Open your mind a little and realize that we do live in a society where we teach women to sit at home after 8 rather than teaching men not to rape.
And yes, if this entry labels me as a feminist, I'm damn proud to be one.
