Injustice or reality?
It started out as a project...but it is continuing as a realization. We( read Ankur, Denize, Ekta Nikul, Jay, Rimple andd I) formed one group in culture studies and were asked to make a project of Islam and how media portrays it. At first we started off thinking how could media possible stereotype a whole community and how could one billion people be so dumb to believe it. But what we realised shook us. We all took great pride in being Indians....until then.
In Lucknow, Muslim women were made to parade naked in broad daylight. And the media didn't report it only because they were scared of the Hindu extremists. The leading newspapers of India never carry any articles related to Muslims. The Godhra riots were provoked by a newspaper whose headlines screamed "60 Hindus dead", "beware of Muslims."
The Godhra genocide which was conveniently coined the brainwave of Muslims was in fact planned by the governments.(Watch final Solution).
The Head of the Muslim community called for a press conference saying that Islam did not encourage terrorism and pleaded with the public not to label their community. The editor of Hindu responded by dismissing his worry. He said that he could understand their
plight but people with other issues as serious such as poverty, corruption etc also felt the same way.
Like we said in our presentation, we label some communities as drunkards, misers or dumb but we label the Muslim community as one that kills and that is no laughing matter.
God gave us five senses. We see, hear, taste, smell and feel. But somewhere down the lane of time we see, we hear...but we no longer feel.(pun intended)
As Denize says you may think that you don't participate in the stereotyping, that you are not mistreating them but the fact that you are silent means that you a participant.
Ankur hopes that this project will go further then just being a project and help the youth to realize what is happening with our Muslim brothers.
Ekta realizes that the stereotyping by the media has brainwashed people over a long period of time, almost 40 years and change wont happened overnight. But she hopes that this generation will not believe the media blindly.
As for me....I agree with all of them.
